Troop 455 is a Scouting America troop based out of Haygood Methodist Church in the Morningside neighborhood of Atlanta GA. The church is the troop’s chartering organization (i.e., sponsor) and generously provides meeting and storage spaces for the troop. The scouts in the troop are generally drawn from Howard Middle School, Midtown High School, and a mix of private schools. There are currently over 40 active scouts in the troop.
Scouting America uses the patrol method to organize scouts within troops. This simply means that the troop is broken up into smaller patrols of around 10 scouts each. The scouts do many of their activities as a patrol, including advancement activities, outing planning, and tenting and cooking on outings. The patrol method allows the scouts to work within a smaller group for many tasks and provides more leadership opportunities. Troop 455 currently has four patrols – Bison, Hawk, Moose, and Scorpion. Your scout will be assigned to a patrol once he joins the troop.
There is a scout leadership structure at Troop 455. The key positions of responsibility (PORs) are:
Senior Patrol Leader (SPL): This position is the highest-ranking scout leader for the troop. This is an elected position.
Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL): This position assists the senior patrol leader. Troop 455 has two assistant senior patrol leader positions.
Patrol Leader (PL): This position is the leader of a patrol. Each patrol has one. This is an elected position.
Assistant Patrol Leader (APL): This position assists the patrol leader. Each patrol has one
Additional Positions of Responsibility: There are other appointed scout positions that will be filled as needed, including Quartermaster, Scribe, Historian, Webmaster, Chaplain, Den Chief, Troop Guide, Troop Instructor, and Outdoor Ethics Guide.
The positions of responsibility are filled twice a year with elections in February and August. Note that your scout can take a position of responsibility once he advances a few ranks. Generally, positions are open to scouts who are First Class or higher in rank. Holding a position of responsibility becomes an advancement requirement as your scout moves up in rank.
