If your scout started in Cub Scouts, then you need to understand how things change when he moves up to Scouting America. If your scout was not in Cub Scouts, that is absolutely no problem and he does not start behind. For those with a Cub Scout background, note these differences between the two programs in terms of parental involvement:
Parental Role: You probably provided a lot of help for your Cub Scout’s activities. How much parental effort is put into the average Pinewood Derby car? You attended all of your Cub Scout’s meetings – indeed, you were required to do so. You camped on the outings as a family. Well, all that changes with Scouting America, which is scout-led. The responsibility is on your scout. The achievements are based on his effort. You do not have to attend all of the meetings or go on all of the outings. You should not do his tasks and projects for him. You get to step back and give your scout space to grow and mature.
Parental Requirement Check Offs in ScoutBook: As a Cub Scout parent, you probably checked off requirements for advancement in ScoutBook on your scout’s profile. Scouting America does not work that way. All requirement check offs must be done by higher ranked scouts, scoutmasters, merit badge counselors, or other adult leaders. Parents do not check off advancement requirements for their scout in ScoutBook.
